FA 321: Intermediate Painting/ 423 Advanced Painting Fall 2009, Mon, Wed, Friday 10:10 – 11:50
Course Objective:
Prereq FA 320.
Structured around a contemporary theme pertaining to painting, this course will examine the possibilities that painting holds today. Students will be asked to articulate their work and explain how they use painting as a means to express themselves. More responsibility and decision-making will be required than in Beginning Painting. Students will also be asked to respond to project guidelines and think about painting as an extension of ideas. Knowledge gained from critiques and discussions should be applied it to the works that follow. Students will be required to complete 4 major projects in addition to studies and sketches on paper. Each student is also required to paint AT LEAST 3 hours per week outside of class time.
Attendance:
This is a very demanding course. Handouts, critiques, and demonstrations will contribute to each student's formal studio technique and critical facility. Interaction and collaboration with your peers will be an important aspect of the learning process. If you miss more than one class, or arrive late consistently you will not receive an A in this course. Please note that this course requires at least 3 hours of homework per week. The projects take a lot of time and energy and will be impossible to complete unless you work consistently throughout the semester. Please do not arrive late or depart early from class meetings, there is simply too much material to cover in each class and it proves to disruptive and disrespectful to all of us. Absence from a class is not an excuse for skipping a tutorial, reading assignment, or project. You are responsible for completing work. Please note:
5 absences results in failure of the course.
15% will be deducted from your final grade if you have missed 3 classes
20% will be deducted from your final grade if you have missed 4 classes
The following also counts as 1 absence:
Arriving more than 10 minutes late to class 3 times.
Leaving early from class without permission.
Not participating in class excercises.
Grading Policy:
Because this class focuses on studio production, a substantial portion of your grade is based on attendance and participation. In addition, all work must be submitted for critique on the due date. You must show work during class critiques to receive a grade. Work should be ready to hang by critique date. If you fail to hand your assignments in on time, 4% per week will be subtracted from the grade received. Work submitted by the deadline may be revised for re-evaluation. Resubmitted work must include substantial revision and show considerable improvement and alteration. Resubmission of work at this stage is strongly encouraged, time permitting. The revised grade will be an average of both grades received. Final Grades will be based on the following factors:
30% Class participation and attendance. Showing up and participating in class discussions and critiques is mandatory.
60% Completion of assignments (see note above Assignments)
10% Final Critique (present all completed assignments, statement of intent and participation
Students with Disabilities:
I am committed to providing assistance to help you be successful in this course. Reasonable accommodations are available for students with a documented disability. Please visit the Disability Resource Center (DRC) during the first two weeks of every semester to seek information or to qualify for accommodations. All accommodations MUST be approved through the DRC (Admin Annex Bldg, Rooms 205). Call 509 335 3417 to make an appointment with a disability counselor.
Academic Dishonesty:
WSU is committed to principles of truth and academic honesty. Academic dishonesty includes cheating, plagiarism, and fabrication in the process of academic work, and can result in suspension or dismissal from the university. In this class, academic dishonesty will result in failure of the course and will be reported to the Office of Student Conduct. Course Projects:
Idea Log
Ongoing. I would like you to keep your notebook handy and make notes throughout the semester about your ideas and things that inspire you. Your ideas and brainstorming will be recorded here. You can use it to jot down artists and ideas mentioned in crits and discussions with your peers. This can be used later to help you write your artist statement.
Project 1: 5 paintings
This project is designed to get things started. I want you to make 5 small paintings exploring any idea(s) you wish. They don’t have to necessarily relate to one another. I just want you to get started. These pieces can be made on paper or you can build your own stretchers/wooden panels in the woodshop.
Project 2: 5 more paintings
This project is designed to encourage you to expand an idea into a series. You will take one of your paintings completed for your first project and expand it into a series. I want you to think about how the paintings work together. Are they all the same size or ratio? Do you employ the same color palette throughout the series? Are they meant to be read serially or can they be read independently? I would like you to build stretchers or supported wooden panels for these pieces.
Project 3: 1 large painting
For this project I would like you all to make 1 large painting expanding on your series. Here you will need to employ more skill constructing your stretcher. There will be an advanced stretcher-building demo.
Project 4: Open
This project should be the grand finale of your semester’s work. Here you should have had the opportunity to flesh out and explore a variety of directions for your ideas. This piece should be succinct in ideas and execution. For the final critique I would like you to discuss your work, your process, your influences (both in the art world and those external to it) and aspirations.
Artist Statement
Due at the final crit.
