What are Material Transfer Agreements?
Material Transfer Agreements (MTAs) are legal
contracts that govern the transfer of material between parties. Example of Materials include assay materials, monoclonal
antibodies, cell lines, mouse strains, plant varieties, technical data, software, confidential information, integrated circuit designs, blueprints,
produces, processes, devices, fabricated equipment, and any other
materials.
Who can help me execute a Material Transfer
Agreement?
Our office, the Office on Intellectual Property
Administration (“OIPA”), handles all outgoing materials.
The Office of Research and Development (“OGRD”) handles all
incoming material transfer agreements.
If you wish to transfer WSU Materials to another academic
institution or industry, please contact our office so that we may provide
you with assistance.
What is the purpose of a Material Transfer
Agreement?
MTAs can provides WSU staff many benefits, such as:

Protection to invention rights (i.e. rights to obtain a patent,
2)
Rights to improvements made using the materials,
3)
Timely sharing of Material,
4)
Control over the distribution of the Material,
5)
Time to comment on any publications regarding the Material,
6)
Acknowledgment of WSU staff in publication resulting from the use
of the Materials, and
7)
Ensuring that care is used when handling the material and regulations are followed.
