Apple VPN (PPTP) Client for OS X (10.3 and above)
The below instructions were created for a MAC OS 10.x user.

Before you setup the Apple VPN client on your machine:

A. You must have a valid WSU NetworkID name and password.

B. You must have a valid Active Directory Account that is enabled and unlocked.

NOTE: If you are a Wireless user on the Pullman Campus... Is your wireless adapter enabled? Make sure it is enabled (Pullman Campus users should get the SSID of 'wsunexus').

Instructions:

1. Creating a Wireless Connection...

In Finder, select the Apple icon, then select System Preferences

2. In System Preferences, click on the Network icon.

3. The Network window will appear similar to the screen shot to the right. Note that you may have different options selected when your window opens up.

Select the down arrow in the Location section.

4. In the Location section, select New Location...

5. Create a name for the 'location', we chose "WSU-wireless".

6. Make sure that in the Show section you have AirPort selected.

Remove the check mark from the Allow this computer to create networks box.

7. Select the TCP/IP item and make sure Configure IPv4 is set to Using DHCP

8. Select the AppleTalk item and make sure you have not checked the box next to Make AppleTalk Active. Again, do not check this box.

You can now hit the Apply Now button at the bottom of the window.

Finally, click on the top left 'red' close icon to close the window.

9. Setting up the VPN Client

From Finder, select the Go, Applications menu selection.

10. Select the Applications/Internet Connection menu item, then click on it's icon...

NOTE: You could have also clicked on the Internet Connect icon that appears in the Apple Menu bar if you already had previously configured the application to appear there...

11. Make sure AirPort is hi-lighted, then click on the Turn AirPort On button.

12. Once the AirPort is turned on (and if you are on the Pullman Campus near a wireless access point), you should see a Network of wsunexus selected. (use the drop down arrows to find 'wsunexus' if it does not appear.)

Make sure a check appears in the Show AirPort status in menu bar box.

13. Click on the VPN icon displayed in the screen displayed in section 12 above and you will be prompted to select a VPN protocol. Select PPTP, then select Continue.

14. Click on the down arrow in the Configurations selection item and pick Edit Configuration...

15. You can now configure your VPN client.

Enter the following information:

REQUIRED: Server Address of vpn-gateway.wsu.edu

OPTIONAL: type in your NetworkID for an Account Name

OPTIONAL: type in your Password

REQUIRED: select Maximum (128-bit only) encryption.

Press OK when finished.

16. Do not Connect yet...

You need to first go to Finder, Apple icon, System Preferences, Network so you can configure the WSU-wireless network connection you created in step 5 above.

17. After you open the Finder, Apple icon, System Preference, Network window, select your previously created WSU-wireless item in the Location section.

Then in the Show section, select the down arrow...

18. Select the Network Port Configurations item...

19. Uncheck all configurations except the Airport and VPN (PPTP) configurations.

Move the AirPort and VPN (PPTP) options to the top of the list.

Press Apply Now.

Click on the upper left icon to close this window.

20. You can now test out your VPN connection!.

You can go back to the VPN window that is displayed in section 16 above... or a second method follows...

Look for the odd, rectangle shaped Connection icon in your Apple Menu bar and click it...

21. Select the Connect menu item...

22. The first time, you may be prompted with this screen - select Always Allow.

If you do not see this screen, proceed to the next item below...

23. Your connection status will be displayed in the Apple Menu Bar.

Again, some people like connecting using the Apple Menu Bar Internet Connect icon whereas other people like to open the Internet Connect Application from the Applications menu and launch their VPN session from there (see section 10).

The screen shots to the right show what the Internet Connect screen looks like during the login process. It is a bit more informative than the Apple Menu Bar version of Internet Connect.

Don't forget to Disconnect your VPN session when you are finished!

Trouble Shooting:

1. Make sure your WSU NetworkID and password were typed with the correct upper/lower case...

2. Make sure your wireless card has a good signal...

3. Disable all wireless and ethernet interfaces, then just enable the wireless interface and attempt to logon again.

4. Reboot your machine and try once more...
