| The Palouse includes several prominent peaks and ridges that rise above the surrounding hills. Some are outliers of the nearby Thatuna Hills, most of which lie to the east in the Idaho panhandle. The well known Kamiak and Steptoe Buttes, as well as others, have some plant communities that are not found on the surrounding lower hills, which are largely covered by grassland communities. This may be partly due to the glacial history of the region, and partly to the slight differences in climate on these buttes. The altitude and slopes of the buttes help to create different environments from those lower down on the Palouse hills. |
Kamiak Butte is a prominent landmark on the Palouse. |
