The remains of Australopithicus africanus have been found in eastern Africa along the Rift Valley from northern Ethiopia to central South Africa. It lived from more than 3 million years ago to approximately 2 million years ago. Closely related species and subspecies of australopithicines survived to approximately l million years ago.
