Minamoto Yoritomo

The Kamakura bakufu was introduced by Minamoto in an epic struggle for power at the end of the Heian period. The civil war that led to Minamoto's rise to power is chronicled in Japan's most influential epic, The Tale of the Heike . This painting reflects Minamoto not as a powerful warlord but as an administrator of peace, unlike the portrait drawn of him in the Heike .
