Similar to the feudalistic period of Europe, Japan, from the 12th to the 19th century, was divided into autonomous territories under the control of feudal lords. These ruling families were referred to as Daimyo. Under the leadership of the Daimyo, the samurai warrior class served to protect the lords lands and war against his enemies.
