Course Objectives: To introduce students to literary texts dating from the 12th through the 16th centuries from a variety of genres including the epic, lai, fabliau, novel/story, theatre, poetry, and philosophical texts; to explain the terminology used in literary study; and to present, albeit briefly, the extra-literary context within which the literary works were written.
Grading: The student's final grade in this course will be calculated in the following way:
Week of August 26: Introduction to course; paleography; introduction to epic poem (La Chanson de Roland)
Week of September 2: Epic poem
Week of September 9: Lai by Marie de France (Lanval)
Week of September 16: Fabliau (Brunain and Perdrix) and Fables
Week of September 23: Prose (Tristan, Gargantua, Princesse de Clèves); Topic of student multimedia project to be discussed one-on-one with instructor; firm topic due on Thursday, 3 October, to be presented briefly to class (come to class with topic, goals, work already done written on index card).
Week of September 30: Prose; Topic of Mid-term Writing Exercise announced - due in class on Thursday, 17 October; Students describe projects on Thurs. 3 Oct.
Week of October 7: Tuesday, 8 October (during regular class time): Students meet Librarian, Paula Elliot, at Holland Library (in lounge to the right of Circulation Desk) for individualized research orientation relating to student projects; Thursday, 10 October: Session on multimedia authoring - details to be announced at a later date.
Week of October 14: Prose; Mid-term Writing Exercise due in class on Thursday, 17 Oct.
Week of October 21: Theatre (Passion, Pathelin, video of play by Molière)
Week of October 28: Theatre
Week of November 4: Poetry (troubadours, Charles d'Orléans, Villon, Ronsard, Labé)
Week of November 11: Poetry
Week of November 18: Poetry; Demonstrations of student multimedia projects; Questions for Final Take-home Exam will be announced.
Week of November 25: Thanksgiving Holiday
Week of December 2: Philosophical Texts (Calvin, Christine de Pizan, Montaigne, Pascal, Descartes)
Week of December 9: Philosophical Texts
Week of December 16: Final Take-home Exam due no later than Monday, 16 December at 4:00pm in my mailbox in Thompson 110. Oral Final Exam on Wednesday, 18 December between 10:00am and 12:00 noon.
