Creating Graphs and Pie Charts Using Cricket Graph III

Check the list of applications to see which computer Cricket Graph III is on. Go into the hard disk of that computer and find the Cricket Graph (CG) folder. Double-click on the CG icon to open the program. You can teach yourself the details of CG through their tutorial; the following is intended to be basic information to get you started.

1) To generate a graph or pie chart, you will first need to create the database of information the graph will be drawn from. A new database opens each time you open CG. You will notice that the database is divided vertically (columns) and horizontally (rows). Entire columns and rows can be added, deleted, and edited by clicking on the individual row or column you want to work with. Entering data is easy: just click in the row or in the individual cell to insert or edit your data. To delete or insert an entire data field, click on the column number, go up to the Data menu, and drag down to Delete or Insert. Note: Your data window must be open to create a graph or pie chart.

2) Once the data has been entered, go into the File menu and drag down to Select All. This will activate the information that will go into your graph. Then choose New Graph from the Graph menu (see page 109 of the CG handbook for details). There are 10 graph styles to choose from; the most common and effective are bar and pie charts. Each graph you create is a graph object with various components that can be edited and resized to suit your needs.

3) Both bar charts and pie charts have similar components that can be moved around on the page to create different visual effects. The important terms you need to know to be able to work with these graphs are (see pages 123-24): Tick Labels (which represent the names of your data fields); the Graph Title (the name of your graph); the Legend (groups the data has been divided into, such as months, years, classes, etc.); Vertical or Horizontal axis. Each of these areas can be selected, moved, resized, edited while in graph mode as long you see a dashed line border around the graph, which indicates that the graph is in edit mode.

4) To resize any kind of graph, simply drag the small box in the lower-right corner of the graph window (page 149). Similarly, the graph can be moved on the page to center it or to flush it left or right by dragging the selected graph frame and positioning it on the page where you want to see it.

5) To change the type size of the the Tick Labels or Graph Title, doubleclick on the text field. A message box called Legend Attributes will appear; at the bottom of the message box is a Type Specifications button; click on this to choose appropriate type sizes and styles.
