Word 6.0.1: Guide to Producing a Thesis/Dissertation at HRC

Be sure to have a copy of the latest WSU Graduate School informationsheet(s) on submission of a thesis/dissertation.

Basics:
(1) Each chapter should be prepared as a separate file or document; don'ttry to type the text of your thesis/dissertation as one long file dividedby sections or manual page breaks! Continuous page numbering is not a problemwith separate files (see below).
(2) Be sure to set the margins and line spacing as required by the GraduateSchool, i.e., 1 inch minimum margins. The Graduate School's line spacingpolicy is double-spacing for the entire thesis/dissertation (including footnotes).
(3) Select a font style and be sure that all chapters and files (such as the Prelim file) and footnotes are in that font. The usual font size selectedis 12 pt.
(4) Don't link your chapters by using the From File button under Objectin the Insert menu.

Page Numbering:
(1) Use automatic page numbering by opening the Page Numbers dialogue boxunder the Insert menu. Do not select Show Number on First Page except foryour Prelims file (so your title page won't have a page no. printed). Themeasurement for the placement of the automatic numbers should be a minimum3/4 inch in From Top and From Right. Every page of the text of the thesis/dissertationmust be numbered. This method is easier than using an upper right headeror centered footer.
(2) Prelims or Preliminary pages are the title, copyright page if used, signature, acknowledgments, abstract, table of contents, and dedication(optional) pages. These must be numbered in lower case roman numerals whichyou select in the Page Numbers dialogue box under the Insert menu; clickon Format... button and make your selection at Number Format. Note thatthe copyright page is unnumbered and uncounted, so you may want to do this page as a separate file.
(3) Continuous page numbering is easy. For example, to begin the firstpage of chapter two as page 38, go to the Page Numbers dialogue box underthe Insert menu and click on Format. Click on the Start at button and typein 38 (or whatever page number you need) in the box to the right. Thenclick OK and then click OK in the Page Numbers dialogue box. Do this toset the beginning page number of each succeeding chapter. Note: you maynot want to do this until far into the thesis/dissertation process afteryour committee has had a chance to read and critique your chapters becauseyou will no doubt be adding and deleting pages from your chapters.

Table of Contents (Manual, not Automatic):
To create a Table of Contents, you will need to set up the format with specialtabs in order to connect the chapter title with page number by a leader(a line of dots) and to align page numbers from right to left. To do this, go to Tabs under the Format menu. When the dialogue box appears, clickRight under Alignment, specify which Leader you want, and in Tab Stop Position, type in 6.0 or 5.5 (depending on what your margins are). Click the OK buttonin each dialogue box. Type the chapter number and name and then press theTab key; Word will put in the leader and when you type the page number thedigits will move left until the last on is aligned. Now your Table ofContents will be aligned!

Acknowledgment of the Humanities Research Center:
If you have completed your thesis/dissertation using the HRC facility orstaff, please insert a brief mention of the Humanities Research Center,College of Liberal Arts in the Acknowledgments. For example, one recentdissertation made the following mention of the HRC on the Acknowledgmentpage: "Finally, I must thank the Humanities Research Center, Collegeof Liberal Arts, whose advanced equipment and technology have made dissertationtypesetting no longer a chore." (Other sample Acknowledgment pagescan be found in the so-titled paperboard binder on the back shelf in theHRC).
