Seedlings: Established Root and Shoot Systems

Alfalfa seedlings

The alfalfa sprouts used commonly in salads are seedlings. Seedlings are rapidly growing young plants that form after seed germination (emergence of the plant from inside of the seed). Seedlings establish themselves on a substrate, such as soil, and begin to produce their own nutritive sugars through photosynthesis.

At the seedling stage, we can readily observe the two primary regions that compose the plant body: (1) the root system and (2) the shoot system. All seed plants, at least early in the seedling phase, will have a root system at one end of the body and a shoot system at the other.
