DESCRIPTION:

Structured around a series of seven problem-solving workshop activities, the student is provided with a hands on, totally experiential introduction to acting, directing, script analysis, playwrighting, design, and criticism.

In providing introductory skills and techniques, the primary objective of this course is to place the student in the creative process of those artists engaged in creating theatre so as to stimulate the student’s own theatrical imagination—i.e. learning by doing.

Students discover the creative, collaborative nature of theatre by working with exercises that consistently simulate the creative work of theatre. As does theatre itself, this course demands a highly interactive, team playing commitment and, because of this, attendance at all classes is expected.

WEB SITE and E-MAIL:

All of our Friday classes are conducted on an interactive website which is designed to stimulate class discussion by extending it outside the bounds of the tradtional classroom. In general the website for Theat160 is a vital component of the course, and to help insure that this really happens, all students are required to have web access and current e-mail accounts. To fully take advantage of the web site you’ll need to have an updated browser such as Netscape, Internet Explorer, or Safari. The URL for the Theat160 website is:

When you enter the site a menu with the following items will welcome you:

Discussion Questions
Get the inside track on exactly
what’s going to be
discussed in class
Contests and Games
Create a Quiz Question
Create a Disc. Question
Solve a Mystery Quotation
FRIDAY TALK PROJECT:
All of our Friday classes will be held on-line. The intent of these weekly Friday on-line classes is to amplify points made in class.

You need to have a:
MINIMUM OF 2 POSTINGS
for each Friday.

Posting more than the bare minimum is, of course, highly encouraged. “Posting" means writing public notes to each other on a state-of-the-art, interactive discussion board. You type directly onto the web page, and with a single press of a button, your note immediately appears for all to see who are currently viewing the page.

Your postings can be either new threads or follow-up responses to what I or your peers have put on the board. The interactive capability of this program creates, in effect, a “virtual class discussion,” with the added advantage that there is a permanent record of what everyone has said. Printouts of your specific contributions to the “Friday Talk Project,” along with a complete COVER SHEET are due at the end of semester (June 18).

THE FINE PRINT OF YOUR CONTRACT
  1. There will be no make-up Quizes. Points for missed quizes can be made up by submitting possible quiz or discussion questions on the class website.

  2. There will be no make-up Scenes.

  3. Attendance at all classes is essential. For each missed class 3 points will be subtracted from you total number of available points.

  4. Missing a class rehearsal will not only result in a reduction of points, but there is a good possibility that you will not be permitted to participate in that project, in which case you would receive a grade of “O” for that performance project.

You will be graded both on what you contribute online, and in class (see packet, pp. 9-14).
4. EXTRA CREDIT:
On-Line Extra Credit is the perfect way to improve your final grade. An extra 10-15 points can make a substantial difference in the outcome of your final grade.
