1. Define comfort? Describe the role of the nurse in providing comfort. Identify
comforting interventions. Discuss Morse's contention that comforting is the central
nursing function. Do you agree? Disagree? Support your conclusion with evidence.
2. Describe some common myths and prejudices about pain and its treatment.
3. Differentiate between acute and chronic pain.
4. Use the symptom analysis format to assess pain. Discuss tools and methods specifically
designed for the assessment of pain.
5. Differentiate among physical dependence, physical tolerance, and addiction. Identify
the indications for use of NSAIDS and various opoids for managing acute and chronic pain.
6. Describe the gate control theory of pain and its application to pain management.
7. Identify factors that affect pain perception and response.
8. State goals and outcomes for a client whose nursing diagnosis is Pain. Describe the
role of the client in determining acceptable levels of pain and sedation.
9. Discuss the use of massage, counterstimulation, healing touch and acupressure for pain
relief. What is the rationale for the use of these methods? When might it be useful to
combine these methods with medication administration for optimal relief of pain?
10. Apply the principles of pain management to the use of both pharmacological and
nonpharmacological interventions for a client in pain.
11. Evaluate interventions for management of pain and suggest changes to improve outcomes.
