1. Discuss factors that influence the quantity of urine produced and those affecting a person's ability to micturate.
2. Describe three major categories of pathology that cause alterations in urinary elimination. Discuss the effects of anesthetics and commonly used medications on renal function, urine output, and urine color.
3. Identify the signs and symptoms of each of the five types of urinary incontinence. Assess for common signs and symptoms of other alterations in urinary function.
4. Formulate three-part NANDA diagnoses for clients with alterations in urinary elimination.
5. Describe nursing interventions and rationale for clients with urinary retention and urinary incontinence.

CASES:
Case A:
Mrs. Hernandez had abdominal surgery using general anesthesia. She returned from the Recovery Room 8 hours ago. Although she has received 100 cc of IV fluids per hour she has not voided. She says she feels like she needs to but can't.

How might effects of the general anesthetic contribute to this problem?

List as many interventions as you can to encourage micturition.

Write a three-part nursing diagnosis for Mrs. Hernandez.

Case B: Mrs. Gold is 84 years old. She has recently moved from a retirement apartment to a nursing home. For the past 2 years she has passed small quantities of urine whenever she coughed or laughed. She uses incontinence pads to manage this problem. Since her ad-mission to the nursing home she has been incontinent of urine on several occasions usually at night. She says she knows she needs to urinate but can't get to the bathroom on time.

Write nursing diagnose(s) for Mrs. Gold.

List specific outcomes and interventions for one diagnosis.
