American Literature Association Conference in Boston, May 2007

1. Howells’s Reviews. For a panel in the program of the 2007 American Literature Association annual convention, the William Dean Howells Society invites paper proposals that examine the work of William Dean Howells in reviews.  Possible topics may include Howells’s own publications as a book reviewer, other critics’ reviews of Howells’s work, or Howells’s responses to the work of other reviewers.  Please send by January 8, 2007 paper proposals no longer than 500 words and copy of cv to Claudia Stokes at Claudia.stokes@trinity.edu or by post to Claudia Stokes, Trinity University, Dept of English, 1 Trinity Place, San Antonio, TX 78212

1. Howells and Women
We invite paper proposals that examine Howells's relationships
with women, broadly defined.  Possible paper topics may include
Howells's own personal life, his fiction and criticism, literary
friendships, writings on marriage and sexuality, or editorial work.
Please send by January 8, 2006 paper proposals no longer than 500 words

2. The Unexpected Howells
We invite paper proposals that examine instances of Howells's
life and work that diverge from what we would normally expect of him,
literary or otherwise.  Possible topics may include politics, ghost
stories and occultism, utopian fiction, poetry, literary criticism,
sentimentalism, and sexuality, among others. Please send by January 8,
2006 paper proposals no longer than 500 words and copy of cv to Claudia

Call for Papers: American Literature Association 2005

Deadline: January 1, 2005

The William Dean Howells Society will sponsor two sessions at the American Literature Association conference on May 26-29 in Boston, MA.

1. Howells and Others
The broadest interpretation of "others" welcome--papers can address Howells's depiction of others in his fiction and nonfiction, specific books like The Whole Family, comparisons to other writers, or his ghost stories and
statements about an afterlife.

2. The Representation of Masculinity in Howells' Writing
Papers can focus on any aspect of the topic.

Call for Articles

  I am preparing a 2-volume Companion to the American Novel for Facts
on File, sequel to the award-winning The Facts on File Companion to the American Short Story, and still have openings for essays on specific American
fiction titles.

  Essays written in a lively, jargonfree style, should be approximately
1000 words exclusive of bibliography. Authors are encouraged to include
original and intriguing interpretations of the novels.

  The deadline is 1 November 2004. The publisher, Facts on File, plans to
  include this book in its forthcoming literature database.

Howells Session at SCMLA (October 2004)

There will be a special session at the South Central Modern Language Association Conference held in New Orleans October 28- 30, 2004 on the topic, "William Dean Howells's America", chaired by Dr. Jerome Loving.  One of the three papers to be presented includes "Howells's  Translation of Culture" by Susan Goodman and Carl Dawson.
